Shimano Ultegra R8170 Di2 Disc Groupset

Drawing on technology refined in the flagship Dura-Ace range, Shimano’s Ultegra R8170 Di2 Disc Groupset is better than ever before. It strikes an exceptional balance between performance and value, offering components that are slick, dependable, and only marginally heavier than their Dura-Ace counterparts.

Shifting is flawless, faster than in previous generations, and operates with near-silent precision. This is thanks to Hyperglide+ tooth profiling, which optimises the interface between chain, chainrings, and cassette for smoother, more responsive shifts, even under load and across the full gear range. The addition of a 12th sprocket further refines gear progression, delivering seamless transitions between ratios.

Braking performance is equally impressive. Redesigned flat-mount calipers provide increased clearance between rotor and pad, minimising the rubbing and scraping noises often encountered in wet or gritty conditions. The Servo Wave brake levers have been re-engineered for improved ergonomics and feature a revised lever stroke that brings the pad into contact with the rotor more quickly, resulting in a more progressive and intuitive feel.

Aesthetically, the groupset is clean and modern. The semi-wireless Di2 system eliminates visible cables between shifters and derailleurs, while the internal battery mounts discreetly within the seatpost or seattube and connects directly to the derailleurs. The charging port is now integrated into the rear derailleur, removing the need for a separate junction box. CR1632 coin cell batteries in the shifters offer 18 to 24 months of use, and the accessible charging point on the rear mech makes powering up the system effortless.

With a wide array of configurations available, including multiple crank lengths and both compact and mid-compact chainring options, this groupset is an outstanding choice for riders seeking to upgrade to a high-performance electronic drivetrain without compromising on reliability or value.
