Road bike fit

Road bike fitting in East Sussex

A road bike fit puts you in a position that's comfortable for hours, efficient enough to make the most of every pedal stroke, and stable when you're descending or riding in a group. It's the single biggest upgrade most road riders can make.

Our road fits take about three hours at our studio near Lewes. We work on your own bike, using BioRacer tools and multi-angle video, and we explain every change so you understand why your new position works.

What is a road bike fit?

A road bike fit is a structured session where a trained fitter adjusts your bike to suit your body, rather than asking your body to adapt to the bike. We look at the three places you touch the bike, your feet, your hips and your hands, and set them up so you can pedal efficiently without strain.

Road bikes are designed for long hours in a fairly low, stretched position. If your saddle is a few millimetres too high, your reach a little too long, or your cleats slightly out of line, you won't notice on a short ride. But over a sportive, a club run or a season of training, those small errors add up to sore knees, a stiff neck, numb hands and lost power.

A good road fit balances comfort, power and aerodynamics. We'll find the most efficient position you can genuinely hold, not one that only looks fast in a photo.

Signs you need a road bike fit

If any of these sound familiar, your position is the first thing to check.

  • Knee painduring or after rides
  • A stiff neck or sore shoulderson longer rides
  • Numb hands or fingersfrom too much weight on the bars
  • Lower back acheespecially on climbs
  • Saddle sorenessthat a new saddle hasn't fixed
  • Hot feet or numb toesoften linked to cleats and shoes
  • Rocking hipsa sign your saddle may be too high
  • A new bikethat doesn't feel quite right yet

What happens in your road bike fit

Every fit is tailored, but this is the order we work in and why.

  1. Rider interview

We talk through your riding, goals, events, injury history and anything that hurts, so we know what we're aiming for.

  2. Off-bike assessment

We check flexibility, posture, leg length differences and foot shape. These set the limits for your position.

  3. Cleats and feet

We set cleat position and rotation, and look at arch support and stance width. Everything else builds on this.

  4. Saddle position

Height, setback and tilt are set so your hips stay stable and your knees track smoothly.

  5. Reach and drop

We fine-tune stem length, bar height and hood position so your upper body is relaxed and your breathing is free.

  6. Video check and report

Multi-angle video confirms the changes. You get before and after measurements to copy onto any future bike.

What's included in your road fit

  • About 3 hours with an experienced fitter
  • Rider interview and off-bike assessment
  • Cleat, saddle, reach and drop setup on your own bike
  • Multi-angle video analysis
  • Before and after measurements to keep
  • Honest advice on any parts that would help
  • A free re-tweak after a few weeks of riding
  • Parts fitted on the day if needed, such as a stem or saddle

Comfort first, then speed

The fastest position is the one you can hold. Riders often arrive having copied a professional's setup, with a long, low position that their flexibility can't support. The result is a sore back and lost power as the body fights the bike. We start from what your body can do comfortably, then look for free speed within that, such as narrower hand positions or a slightly lower front end where your flexibility allows it.

If you race, ride time trials or do triathlons, our BioRacer TT and triathlon fit goes much further on aerodynamics. If your feet are the problem, ask about adding Sidas custom insoles to your fit.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a road bike fit take?

About three hours. We don't rush, because each change affects the next one. Allow a little extra time in case we fit any new parts.

Will a road bike fit make me faster?

Usually, yes. Most riders gain power from a more stable, efficient position, and many find they can hold a lower, more aerodynamic position comfortably. The main gain, though, is comfort, which means you ride further and train more consistently.

Can you fit my road bike if it's the wrong size?

We'll get the best possible position from your bike and tell you honestly if the frame is limiting you. If you're planning a new bike, our frame and size fit helps you choose the right size first.

What if I need new parts?

We'll recommend only what makes a real difference, such as a different stem length, saddle or bar width. As a Cytech-trained workshop we can usually fit them on the day.

Is there any follow-up after my fit?

Yes. After a few weeks of riding in your new position, come back for a free re-tweak. Small changes are normal as your body adapts.
